Global Call-Centre Employment Falls 5.3% as AI Slows Hiring
Revelio Labs data shows the first sustained decline in global call-centre employment in more than a decade.
Global call-centre employment was 5.3% below its December 2023 peak in early October 2026, according to Revelio Labs data reported by FourWeekMBA. The decline is the steepest and most persistent in the dataset, with year-on-year falls in eight of the 70 quarters since 2009.
The change appears to be driven mainly by slower hiring as businesses automate customer interactions, rather than by mass layoffs. Gartner forecasts AI bots will reduce contact-centre labour costs by $80 billion in 2026.
The transition is uneven. TaskUs CEO Bryce Maddocks said agentic AI could reduce customer-support costs by 25% to 50%; the company employs more than 63,000 people, and digital customer-experience services represented 57% of its second-quarter 2026 revenue. Klarna, meanwhile, initially used AI for work equivalent to 700 agents before rehiring after quality problems.
Gartner reported that only about 20% of customer-service leaders had reduced agent headcount because of AI in its October 2025 survey. It expects half of those employers to rehire for similar work, often under different job titles, by 2027.
For employers, the data supports treating AI adoption as a staged workforce redesign rather than assuming every automated task justifies immediate termination. Map which duties genuinely disappear, consult affected employees before deciding, assess suitable redeployment and document the operational reason for any genuine redundancy.
- Global call-centre employment was 5.3% below its December 2023 peak in early October 2026.
- The decline is primarily linked to slowed hiring amid AI automation, not mass layoffs.
- TaskUs said agentic AI could cut customer-support costs by 25% to 50%.
- Gartner expects some employers that cut AI-exposed roles to rehire similar work by 2027.
For employers: Treat AI adoption as a staged workforce redesign: identify duties that genuinely disappear, consult before deciding, assess redeployment and document the operational basis for any genuine redundancy.
