Telstra–Accenture AI venture proposes up to 209 job cuts

The joint venture cited reduced work and access to Indian AI expertise as some roles move offshore.

Telstra and Accenture’s Data & AI joint venture proposed up to 209 redundancies on 10 February 2026, with some work moving to India.

ABC News reported that the venture said certain work was no longer needed and that it would gain access to AI expertise in India. The cuts therefore combine restructuring, offshoring and AI capability-building rather than demonstrating a straightforward replacement of every role by automation.

The proposal is separate from Telstra’s 550 Enterprise job cuts announced in July 2025, which the company said were not related to AI investment.

For employers, the distinction matters: identify whether each role is genuinely no longer required because of a documented operational change, rather than treating AI adoption as automatic justification. Consult affected employees before deciding, assess suitable redeployment, and keep the reasons for any final redundancy decision separate from work that is merely being relocated.

Key points
  • Up to 209 roles were proposed for removal within the Telstra–Accenture Data & AI joint venture.
  • Some work was expected to move to India.
  • The venture cited work no longer being needed and access to Indian AI expertise.
  • The proposal involved mixed restructuring and offshoring, not confirmed pure AI replacement.

For employers: Separate automation, offshoring and general restructuring when planning redundancies. Document the genuine operational change, consult before deciding, and assess redeployment opportunities before finalising any role loss.
